Is today’s ‘complicated’ world hindering our children’s development?

New report raises concerns over lack of freedom for today’s children

Summary: It is widely understood that playing freely is good for children, but today’s parents are united in the belief that their children lack the freedom they had as a child (63%).

·         Fears over safety mean that more than half (57%) of nine year olds are restricted to within sight of their home, with 29% unable to venture out of the grounds, despite parents (44%) admitting to playing in secret dens in wooded areas and local parks when they were young.

·         According to the The Dairylea Simple Fun Report*, released today and authored by childhood expert Tim Gill, an overwhelming majority (84%) of today’s parents believe that their own child’s childhood is more complicated than that of previous generations, dominated by computers, constrained by parent fears and blighted by school pressure.

·         The majority of parents (74%) believe that technology plays too big a part in play with 58% going as far as saying they are ‘concerned’ about the amount of time their children spend in front of a screen.

·         Combined, these pressures leave children with less time than their parents had for ‘simple fun’, such as playing outdoors with friends. With two in three (67%) children craving playtime with friends, but only 16% having the time and freedom to do this every day and 36% less than once every two weeks.

·         So how do we ensure we’re not wrapping our children up in cotton wool and hindering their opportunity to learn for themselves and experience real life, but without putting them at risk?

Interview: The report’s author Tim Gill to discuss what is becoming a controversial, confusing and worrying issue for parents.

Summer Family Fun

Throughout the summer break Mums and Dads all over the country  become full-time entertainers for their kids, with most doing their usual day job at the same time.  It’s little wonder, therefore, that many parents have no time to plan a summer of fun for their children, instead relying on last minute activities to keep them occupied. If that sounds familiar, fear not! We’ve picked out some of the best, low cost activities on offer from July to September and they’re guaranteed to get little ones active, inspired and out in the fresh air. July:·         The winner of the South African World Cup will have been decided by the time the kids break up from school, but their enthusiasm and love for football will be at an all time high. Take them to a local park and go through some basic drills, such as shuttle passing or dribbling. If the usual British summer rain makes an appearance, why not keep them occupied by getting them to design new kits for their favourite clubs? ·         What do kids love more than digging in mud and discovering wildlife? Not much! Organising a nature trail in your local woods is simple and with a whole host of species likely to be found, from bugs to birds to frogs and toads, it could provide hours of fun- just make sure you kit them out with some decent walking boots to protect their feet when they’re running around on the rough ground. Download a guide, such as the BBC’s ‘Guide to Ladybird’s of the British Isles’ to keep them focused and to keep the trail educational! August:·         You may well be jetting off to somewhere sunny in August and, unless your destination has a kids club, the kids will still need entertaining! Summer holidays provide a great opportunity for children to practise and strengthen their swimming skills- whether abroad or in the UK. If your little ones need some help feeling confident in the water, encourage them to play volleyball in a shallow pool ‘til they’re happy.  ·         Fingers crossed, we’ll see some sun in August! What better reason to dig out the walking boots once more and get out in the fresh air? Explore your local area- if you live in the southeast take a trip to the South Downs and visit the Jack and Jill windmill at Clayton, West Sussex. In the southwest the Jurassic Coast makes for a lovely day out, while in the northeast the kids will love a visit to Raby Castle followed by a stroll around the 200-acre deer park. For those in the northwest, the Go Ape! course at Delamere provides a fun-filled day out in the fresh air.September:·         It’s worth getting the kids back into a routine that involves education as the holidays come to a close. Make it fun by taking them to museums and educational shows- they’ll love the Science Museum or the butterfly house at the Natural History Museum! ·         For a cheap day in, get the kids cooking! Everyone remembers baking cakes as children and your little ones will love eating the fruits of their labour after a couple of hours in the kitchen. Think Victoria sponges, fairy cakes, cookies and brownies... Yum!As you send the kids back to school after a fun-filled summer break, pack the boots away and enjoy the chance to relax and indulge in some you time- you deserve it!
