British kids teach their parents a lesson...in life
When most of us were kids, our lives revolved around toys, ice creams and playing and not much else – let’s face it, we didn’t worry too much about the world outside our bubble.
But how do today’s children compare? Are they more socially aware? More concerned about helping others? More environmentally friendly?
According to a new survey released today, children from a very young age are leading the way and teaching their parents lessons they never learnt when they were young.
Over half of all parents say they wish they were taught about the environment when they were children the way today’s kids are.
And half of the parents surveyed for the study by Tetra Pak UK say because of this, children now become aware of recycling by the age of five, while over a third say their youngest child encourages them to recycle.
So does this environmental consciousness transcend to other parts of children’s lives? Do they care more about less fortunate people? Are they more likely to get involved in charities from a younger age? Are they more concerned generally about the world around them?
And if so, will this lead to a more altruistic society in years to come?
In our latest parenting podcast child psychologist Elizabeth Kirby talks about whether there is a difference in how kids these days see the world compared to how we did and what this could mean for future generations.
Watch Dr Hilary Jones Highlight The Importance of Asthma
A new survey of GPs indicated that asthma education for healthcare professionals is low priority.
Over half of GPs agree that the number of deaths from asthma could be reduced with better care.
To mark World Asthma Day 2011, Asthma UK is urging commissioners of education and training to
prioritise asthma and is asking people with asthma to speak out about the impact of asthma on their
lives.
The release of a new survey has revealed that asthma training for healthcare professionals is a low priority
despite over half of GPs agreeing that the number of deaths from asthma could be reduced with better
care. The survey revealed that two thirds of GPs feel GPs’ asthma knowledge could be improved and nearly
half also believe that asthma care could be improved cost effectively, which could potentially save the
NHS £45 million from avoidable hospital admissions.
The charity’s Get it Off Your Chest campaign aims to get asthma taken more seriously and ultimately
save lives. People are urged to speak out about the impact of asthma on their lives by sharing stories
online at asthma.or.uk/getitoffyourchest.

Watch our video to see how a young medical student hasn’t let the condition stop her running the London Marathon
At just 23, medical student Cat Bull is one of ten million people in the UK living with arthritis. While the condition is often associated with the older generations, Cat is one of thousands of young adults and children living with the inflammatory form of the disease, rheumatoid arthritis, in the UK.
Whilst rheumatoid arthritis is a painful and often debilitating condition it hasn’t stopped Cat embarking on the Virgin London Marathon, one of the biggest athletic challenges in the world. Cat had a hip replacement when she was 14 yet she is still planning on running the 26 mile course.
When the training gets tough for Cat, remembering that a few years ago she could barely walk and her mum had to feed and dress her, keeps her going. She says: “Being able to even attempt the marathon is fantastic. Inevitably the illness has given me problems along the way but I refuse to let the disease ruin my life or stop me achieving my goals.”
In the following video she tells how she has slowly built up to the big race and how she has overcome the obstacles along the way. She’ll also give a fascinating insight into what it’s like to live with arthritis at such a young age.
Bullying Information For Kids Bullying affects everyone involved and no one comes out the winner. Even the bully is a victim. Anyone can be a bully and may not even realize it. Bullying can be physical or mental and can occur over the Internet, when the bully and the victim are not even in the same place. By creating an environment that promotes respect and acceptance, bullying can stop.

Accidents at home – how to avoid them
Accidents at home are currently estimated to account for 77% of all accidents. Obviously, this figure is skewed slightly by the fact that most of us spend more time at home than we do at work, or in the car, or down the pub (most of us); however, even taking this into account, we find that the home is an inordinately dangerous place: about 1 in 17 people each year will suffer an injury caused by an accident in the home. A fatal injury in the home occurs approximately once every 14 minutes; for non-fatal (but in many cases, still serious) injuries, the figure is once every 4 seconds. On top of all this, The Home Safety Council’s estimates show that accidents at home, in total, cost the economy as much as £237 billion each year.
The process of child birth can push many women’s bodies to the extreme, which will leave some women with health problems they are too embarrassed to speak about. One of these problems is that of female (or stress) incontinence, which can leave many women experiencing “embarrassing leaks”. A staggering third of new mums and half of all women reaching menopause will suffer from the embarrassment of stress incontinence. Worse still, the majority will fail to seek clinical help and will put up with the symptoms for an average of 4 years before consulting a health professional.Luckily, there is a new NHS approved device to help women strengthen their pelvic floor muscles, quickly and easily, in the privacy of their own home. The PelvicToner helps women identify and isolate the pelvic floor muscles and then exercise them more effectively by squeezing against a mild resistance. It has been proven to be far more effective than electro-stimulation devices. From those who took part in an exercise programme using the PelvicToner vaginal exerciser, 87% of users said that they had become more aware of their pelvic floor within just 2 weeks and 80% reported an improvement in their sex lives after just 4 weeks…..(which is great news for husbands too)The PelvicToner has been approved by the NHS and from 1st January 2011 you will be able to get it onprescription from your GP (free if you have a valid MATB1 form).
Most people think autistic children are just badly behaved
New research has revealed the nation have a lack of understanding about autism with many just perceiving autistic children as “naughty” and ill-behaved.Over half (58%) said they have been openly criticised by a passer-by about their child’s behaviour and almost a third of parents and carers (32%) said their child had been excluded from a recreational club or activity due to their autism. Three quarters of parents and carers of autistic children believe the public see their children as just “naughty”, with almost nine in ten (87%) saying they are stared at when they are out in public. The lack of understanding can cause families to feel isolated and in some cases to start avoiding going out to public places. As many as 87% of parents and carers feel unsupported by their communities and over half described the public’s perception of autism as “poor” despite it affecting one in a 100 children in the UK. This was in fact borne out by an additional survey which found that over a quarter (26%) of the general public believes children with autism are often “badly behaved”. The research, released to coincide with the launch of TreeHouse’s new national campaign - “Talk about Autism”, supported by Talk Talk, shows a fifth of people (19%) think autism affects just one in one thousand people whereas in truth it is ten times more common, affecting one in one hundred.
