Recipes to use up leftovers - Love Food Hate Waste campaign website
Every year in the UK we throw away a staggering one third of all the food we buy. Love Food Hate Waste – a campaign from WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) – highlights the fact that wasted food is a waste of money and a major contributor to climate change. And the most frustrating thing is that most of what we throw away could have been eaten – it's not just peelings, teabags and bones. The Love Food Hate Waste website provides delicious recipes to make the most of the food in our fruit bowl, fridge and cupboards, handy hints for storing food, surprising facts on what can be frozen and much more... there is something for everyone, whether you are a keen cook and organiser or more spontaneous. Visit Love Food Hate Waste for more ways to love food and reduce our food waste.

“Spend it Wisely”

Easy tips to make savvy shopping child’s play...

We’ve all experienced trying to rush around the shops with the kids in tow – it’s not easy! And new research shows it could mean you end up splashing out £68.44 each month on items you don’t need or later wish you hadn’t bought.

More than a third of people said they are most likely to buy something they regret when they are in a hurry and haven’t got time to look around for the best deals or think about value properly. So when you’ve got shopping to do before you take the kids to swimming lessons, birthday parties or even home for tea, it’s an easy trap for parents to fall into.

The research shows that men are the worst offenders when it comes to buying items they later wish they hadn’t, parting with more £968 a year or £57,223 over a lifetime. In comparison, women will splash out just £649 annually - £46,239 in a lifetime - on things they wish they hadn’t bought.

The study of 3,000 respondents by Kodak, revealed that clothes are more likely to leave people regretting their new buy, followed by gadgets and shoes. And more than a third admit to having been caught out by additional upkeep or running costs of items they have bought. Petrol (51%) tops the list of most annoying upkeep costs, followed by printer ink (45%), subscriptions for pay-TV or websites (39%) and replacement batteries (32%).

Having kids can be costly enough without this extra expenditure so it’s time to be a little bit more shopper savvy.  And with VAT having gone up to 20% in January, now is the time to think more carefully about what we’re spending.

Consumer finance expert, Jasmine Birtles, says: “If you are looking to get the best value and save on unnecessary costs, shopping around is vital. Thanks to the internet, it’s now easy to research different brands and products on offer – you just need to be prepared to do the ground work before you hit the shops and you could save hundreds of pounds.”

In the following video, Jasmine offers her top saving tips:

Parents Keener for Kids to be Greener

Mums and dads determined to pass on the ‘ethical’ gene

Despite a plethora of Government and local council targets to get us to be greener and more ethical – it seems we often don’t start thinking about the damage we are doing to the environment until we have kids.

With acres of media coverage telling us of perils of not looking after the planet or local society, it is parenthood that brings about the biggest change in social consciousness, according to research released today. And it suggests that parents across the UK are determined that they pass on a more ethical conscience so that their children do their bit.

Since becoming parents one in five (18%) claim that they are recycling more, 17% have a better regard for the environment, with the same amount looking to cut down on food waste, and encouragingly 90% acknowledge they can do more.

Moreover, it is a green conscience that parents are most keen to pass on to their offspring. After being sensible with their money and being polite, half of all parents (51%) are keen for their children to recycle and a third expect them to reduce the amount of energy they use.

But it’s not just environmental ethics the parents are hoping to pass on. More than a third (36%) would like to see their children donate money or time to good causes. A quarter is adamant that their children should use their savings positively and 15% would like to see their children make a positive impact on society.

The green study by the UK’s leading ethical bank, Triodos, explains that green savers are also happier with how their own money is being used with two thirds (64%) declaring themselves as extremely satisfied or satisfied compared to just 37% of those saving with other banks and building societies.

In our podcast Huw Davies, Head of Personal Banking at Triodos Bank and Sarah Pennells, independent broadcaster and ethical financial expert discuss how being green and savvy can live hand in hand.

Heating on yet?

nigel gifts

Reaching for your thermostat yet? Digging out the woollies? I'm much more conscious of our energy use at this time of year, as home suddenly feels colder and in need of lighting. Energy saving light bulbs come in a huge range of styles, and there's some extremely cool and stylish eco lampshades made especially for low energy bulbs. Delay turning on the heating by banishing draughts, getting snug in bed, and conserving heat. And if the heating is on – get the most out of your radiators: make sure you feel every last bit of heat!

Spot light on FSC: the mark of sustainable forestry

It's coming up to FSC Friday, 24th September, when the Forest Stewardship Commission highlight the importance of preserving woodlands and forests around the world, for the health of the planet and for future generations. The FSC mark means you can buy wood products with a clear conscience, knowing that it has been produced with respect for plant and animal life, and the rights of indigenous peoples.

I'm very happy to have some great FSC certified products on offer, from flip flops to iPad sleeves, colouring pencils to raised planting beds, there's 'good wood' items for the home, garden, office and school. I particularly like this quirky noughts and crosses game, looks great on the mantelpiece and  lots of fun! Read more about the FSC certified products we sell on my blog.

BEAT THE CREDIT SQUEEZE BY BECOMING GREEN AND SLASH NEARLY £400 OFF HOUSEHOLD BILLS, SAYS NIGEL'S ECO STORE

IN THESE TIMES of a tightening economy, sky high energy costs and rising food prices, UK households can weather the storm by going green – and save almost £400 a year on heating, electricity and grocery bills if they choose to live eco, says Nigel's Eco Store.

“The tide is finally changing and green living is becoming synonymous with money saving while helping the planet,” says Nigel Berman, MD of Nigel's Eco Store.

"During the credit crunch, consumers can reduce their household bills by £367 if they used environmentally sound products such as Energy Saving light bulbs, a Radiator BoosterTM , EcoballsTM, an EcobuttonTM and a Standby kit," adds Berman.

“A good start to cutting energy bills is to replace old fashioned light bulbs with energy saving ones – householders can reduce their annual electricity bills by around £100 and save money on buying ordinary light bulbs.

“For instance, our 11 Watt compact classic light bulb, equivalent to a 60 Watt incandescent bulb, lasts 15 times longer so consumers won't have to fish out money for new ones every so often,” adds Berman.

“Householders could click themselves to even lower electricity bills by using an EcobuttonTM every time they take a break as leaving a desktop computer on while not in use wastes around £50 a year on average. This great USB device that powers down computers at a touch of a button and will save them money, electricity and reduce their carbon footprint.

“And because people are generally notoriously bad at turning things off, they burn away another £37 a year just by leaving TVs, stereos, DVD players and other electricity guzzling devices on standby. They could be saving this money for a rainy day by plugging the Standby energy saving kit into any wall socket to control any appliance (up to 1000W) with a remote control.

With radiators known for their inefficiency in distributing heat around the room, people tend to turn their thermostat up a notch using more gas, spending more money on heating bills in return and increasing their impact on the environment.

By installing a Radiator BoosterTM on top of their radiators, householders could enjoy significantly lower heating bills – by £98 a year - as well as warmer rooms.

The booster's fans suck the warm air up and push it out through the ends distributing it evenly around the room, in addition to reducing the heat losses through the wall behind the radiator.

“And when it comes to washing clothes, the average British family gets through 247 washing loads** a year and with each costing about 33p***, their yearly washing powder bill amounts to nearly £82. Although it doesn't seem like a lot, replacing it with EcoballsTM costing 3p**** per wash, they could be saving a massive £74 a year,” advises Berman.
