Poor working mums to be hit by new welfare reforms, pushing a quarter of a million children deeper into poverty

Save the Children launches MUMS UNITED campaign for struggling working mums

During the week of Mother’s Day, mums and celebrity mums across the UK are standing as ‘Mums United’ with Save the Children behind the slogan ‘Make Mums' Day, Make Work Pay’. As the new budget looms, they are joining behind the charity’s calls to George Osborne after discovering the new welfare system will hold back 100s of 1000s of mums from the workplace and drive a quarter of a million children deeper into poverty.

The charity’s new research shows that 150,000 of the UK’s poorest single working mums could lose up to £68 a week under the new Universal Credit, pushing a quarter of a million children deeper into poverty. The findings also showed that the reforms will affect ‘second earners’ – most of whom are women - with some families losing up to £1800 a year. While many will be helped by the new system, a total of 1.1million families with children will be left poorer after the new changes than they are now.

With female unemployment already topping 1m, and mums struggling with cuts to tax credits, childcare support and child benefit, mums from across the UK are using this year's Mother's Day to voice their discontent, many for the first time, about their struggles. Celebrity mums, including Kym Marsh and Karren Brady, have added their voices to the online campaign, helping raise awareness of the silent struggles these mums are faced with on a daily basis.

Kym Marsh said: " Having been a single mum on benefits I completely understand when they say that the best chance kids have of not growing up in poverty is if their mums can work. The problem, though, is not just the cost of childcare – every mums nightmare !! – but also that the government’s new welfare reforms coming in are going to mean work won’t pay for some of the poorest mums out there. So what happens to them and their kids?’

Meanwhile, childcare costs continue to soar, causing further reasons to keep mums out of the workplace. A new poll by netmums for Save the Children’s Mums United campaign showed 56% of mums said the main thing stopping them from taking a job or making them consider giving up work is the cost of childcare.

Justin Forsyth, Save the Children CEO said: “Universal Credit will help some families, but mums working hard to stay above the breadline are its big blind spot. A single mum on £370 a week simply can't afford to lose £68. Mothers who want to work more to provide for their children while juggling soaring childcare and living costs should be getting more help, not less. The government must make sure mums who want to work keep more of their incomes and get more support with childcare. Otherwise we’ll see fewer women in the workplace and more children growing up in poverty.”

Save the Childrenis launching its Mums United campaign in collaboration with Gingerbread, the Daycare Trust and Netmums to make work pay for mothers who want to work their way out of poverty. It makes three main calls to Chancellor George Osborne for the Budget on 21st March:

- Ensure single working mums keep more of their incomes before losing any benefits, as they are the only earner in the family.

- Ensure second earners keep first £2000 of their earnings without losing any benefits, as main breadwinners do;

- Increase support for childcare costs for low income families from the current level of 70% to 80%, to make sure mums are not priced out of work.

Mr Forsyth continues: “Too many children in this country are going without basics like hot meals or proper clothes because their parents can’t earn enough. We know from other countries that supporting mums who want to work takes children out ofpoverty, so we need a system which offers mothers that choice. Unless we seemovement on childcare and benefits for struggling working mums in this budget, it could be too late for hundreds of thousands of children.”

The main findings of the Save the Children research are:

- Lack of funding means that many poor parents trying to work more hours will lose out under Universal Credit, pushing more children into poverty. The majority of children in poverty live in working households;

- A typical single parent with three children, working full time on or around the minimum wage, could be as much as £3500 (£68 per week) worse off;

- A single parent with two children, working full time on or around the minimum wage, could be as much as £2500 per year (£48 per week) worse off;

- As well as hitting single parents working longer hours, the new system will support single earner couple families at the expense of couples where both parents work part-time on a low income. A typical low income couple with three children where one parent works 24 hours a week and the other works a few hours on low pay could lose as much as £1800 (£35 per week) under the new system;

- The number of people having to work part-time but wanting full-time work has recently reached a record 1.3 million;

MUMS UNITED SUPPORTING EXTRA-TIME FOR FAMILIES

Kirsty Gallacher launches Beko Mums United

Celebrity mum and Beko Mums United ambassador, Kirsty Gallacher, is backing a nationwide campaign to engage mums in their child’s sporting activities, following a nationwide survey of mums that revealed that 68% of mums wanted to get more involved.

The research was carried out to develop Beko’s Mums United community facebook page, which also offers handy hints from Kirsty on everything from improving your football knowledge to Halloween costume inspiration and nutrition tips.  Join now at www.facebook.com/bekomumsunited.

Beko Mums United ambassador, Kirsty Gallacher, said: “I meet lots of mums and dads who lack the confidence to get involved with their son or daughter’s sporting activity because they feel they don’t have sufficient knowledge. Beko Mums United aims to build that confidence by providing some simple but helpful advice. I know first hand the benefits of playing sport as a family and it’s something I’m always keen to champion.”

“Beko Mums United encourages parents to spend more time with their kids, giving tips about sport and nutrition with a backdrop of grassroots football.  If it can help bring families closer together whilst encouraging a healthier, active lifestyle, we believe that’s the real winner.”

The Beko Mums United campaign was developed off the back of 900 conversations with mums across the country.   90% of mums agree that outdoor sports help their child develop their communication and teambuilding skills.  This desire to get involved with their kids through sport played a huge role in the look, feel and content of the facebook page.

Over a fifth of Mums were interested in learning more about football jargon, and over a third were interested in getting ideas on nutritional tips for their children. Beko Mums United wanted to design a campaign that was for mums by mums, giving Mums the opportunity to select the video content down to the background and colours used on the finished design.

As well as providing a community for families to have fun and learn more, Beko Mums United is the place to win great prizes including a new football kit for your child’s grassroots football team, a week’s place on an Official Soccer School course and up to £500 worth of Beko household appliances.

Beko is the proud sponsor of Official Soccer Schools in association with The Football League.  The Football League has recruited 17 clubs so far across The Championship, League One and League Two. Official Soccer Schools encourages children aged between 2 and 18 years old to keep active, improve their football skills and make new friends over term time, half term and the summer holidays.

Kirsty Gallacher and former Premier League manager, Alan Curbishley, attended an exclusive Soccer Schools coaching session at Brentford Football Club with Mount Carmel Primary School.  The group of Year Three pupils were given special access to play on the first team pitch to celebrate the launch of Official Soccer Schools sponsored by Beko.

The 17 clubs taking part include Bradford City, Brentford, Bury, Cardiff City, Doncaster Rovers, Hartlepool United, Millwall, Northampton Town, Oldham Athletic, Port Vale, Portsmouth, Rochdale, Stevenage, Swindon Town, Stockport County, Tranmere Rovers and Wycombe Wanderers.  Book your place now at www.officialsoccerschools.co.uk.

Beko UK and Ireland Marketing Director, Teresa Arbuckle, commented on the announcement:  “Beko is proud to be supporting Official Soccer Schools.  Our research highlighted that almost 70% of mums are always looking for ideas to keep their children amused during the holidays.”

“Beko Mums United offers a great platform to share ideas; helping busy families make the most of their time with their children, enjoy football and a healthy lifestyle. We aim to give them the tips and help to do that, and, in the process, encourage more kids to get into sport”.

SIX-YEAR-OLD STRIKER, AIDAN SMITH, RAISES £1,000 TO CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF FOOTY TEAMMATE

Beko Mums United celebrates community grassroots hero

Six year-old striker, Aidan Smith, has convinced family and friends to sponsor every goal he scores this season, to raise money for the family of best friend, Callum Henry, who passed away in September.

Aidan, from Castle Vale, Birmingham, sadly lost teammate and friend, in a car accident. But rather than let the loss of his friend affect his football, Aidan decided to use his hot form in front of goal, for Castle Vale Under 7’s, to support his close friend’s family.

Aidan’s story was selected from hundreds of competition entries on Beko’s Mums United Facebook page. Each month, Beko rewards a winner with a new football kit, a week’s soccer school place and £500 worth of Beko home appliances. Aidan’s story was selected by Beko Mums United ambassador, Kirsty Gallacher.

Mum, Jayne Smith, explains how the idea came about: “Aidan was understandably very upset when Callum passed away. They used to train together with Callum’s team, Castle Vale Under 10’s, even though Aidan was a few years younger. Aidan would also watch as many of Callum’s matches as he could.”

“To help Aidan remember his fond memories of playing football with Callum, I sat down with him to talk about things we could do. Aidan came up with the idea of getting sponsored for every goal he scores. Friends and family were immediately supportive, and before long, we were up to £30 per goal!”

So far, the striker has raised £1,020 in Callum’s memory after finding the back of the net 34 times this season. And, with Castle Vale’s season coming to a close in Easter, mum Jayne, says captain, Aidan, has no plans to stop scoring goals as the season comes to a close:

“We are hoping more sponsors get in touch with us.  Aidan is determined to keep scoring goals and raise even more money next season, in memory of his friend.”

Beko Mums United ambassador, Kirsty Gallacher, said: “What a truly remarkable young man.  He’s an inspiration to kids, and adults, all over the UK. Aidan was a worthy winner of the monthly Beko Mums United Facebook competition.”

Beko Mum’s United is an online community helping mums (and families) to have fun through football.  Visit Mums United’s facebook page to find a host of video tips from Kirsty Gallacher.  Beko Mum’s United is giving mums the chance to enter the simple monthly promotion by telling Beko why their child deserves to win the prize.

Recent research by Beko found that 68% of mums want to get more involved in their child’s sporting activities.  Beko spoke to 2,000 mums and 48% of mums said if they had an extra hour a day, they’d like to spend it having fun with their family.  Join now at www.facebook.com/bekomumsunited.

To sponsor Aidan, please email Jayne Smith on Castlejks8@hotmail.com

NEWPORT TEENAGER’S STORY DELIVERS EARLY CHRISTMAS CHEER

Beko Mums United celebrates real grassroots heroes

The heart-warming story of 13 year old, Ayse Powell, delivered early Christmas cheer for a Newport family this week.  Ayse’s story was selected from hundreds of entries on Beko’s Mums United facebook page to win a new football kit, a week’s soccer school place and a Beko gas cooker and freezer.

Ayse broke her leg and ankle in a playground accident at Newport Junior School three years ago. The injury made it difficult to care for her mum, Mary, who suffers from multiple sclerosis.  Mary has suffered from MS for 20 years and often gets help from Ayse with everyday tasks.

Mary, 49, commented:  “My daughter is an absolute super-star. She was so brave after the accident, and continued to help me as much as possible. She was understandably wary of sports and physical activites when she recovered, and tried dancing and singing, but she really wanted to play football.

“I told her to go for it, and she hasn’t looked back. Ayse now turns out for Newport Girls Athletic U13’s. I’m truly amazed at the power of her kick!

And Ayse will be the toast of her teammates when she turns up with a new kit for Newport Girls.  She will also be attending a weeklong Official Soccer School (supported by Beko) to improve her football skills next Easter.

“I couldn’t believe it when Beko Mums United contacted me, I never win anything!  This is a great reward for Ayse’s bravery and perseverence.  Not only does she get a brand new kit for her team and a place on an Official Soccer School but we’ve also won a new gas cooker and freezer.  We can’t wait to cook Christmas dinner in our new kitchen!”

Beko Mums United ambassador, Kirsty Gallacher, said: “What a truly remarkable young girl.  She’s an inspiration to kids, and adults, all over the UK.  Despite her lack of mobility and the obvious pain she must have endured, she was always there for her mum.  Ayse was the only choice for the inaugural Beko Mums United facebook competition.”

Beko Mum’s United is an online community helping mums (and families) to have fun through football.  Visit Mums United’s facebook page to find a host of video tips from Kirsty Gallacher.  Beko Mum’s United is giving mums the chance to win a new kit for their child’s team, a week’s soccer school place and £500 worth of Beko products for mum every month.
