Kids care about their pets more than their siblings

We’re often referred to as a nation of animal lovers and now a new study shows that our love of all things furry is firmly being passed on to our kids with a poll of children revealing they care more about their pets than they do about their brothers and sisters and their friends.

Over 70% of the children surveyed have a pet, with cats and dogs and goldfish the most likely animals to be found in British homes, but snakes, lizards, frogs and sheep are also getting pampered by their youthful in homes around the UK.

When asked what animal they would most like to have, dog’s were a clear winner, followed by followed by rabbits, hamsters and cats.

But it’s not just their own animals that British children care about with. Our fauna also looks to be in good hands for the future with over 90% of kids saying they are concerned about wildlife.

And their knowledge of what can be found in our backyards is also excellent with the majority saying they would recognise a robin, pigeon, blackbird, magpie, blue tit and a sparrow if they saw one frolicking outside.

Over 90% say they have visited a farm and more than 70% a wildlife sanctuary.

Nearly half of the 7-15 year olds surveyed by Wilkinson Petcare have helped an injured animal, while a quarter have fed a wild hedgehog.

Top Tips for Pet Care:

  • 1. Pay your pet attention. Pets need love and affection as much as people
  • 2. Exercise – The more exercise the better prevention of your pet becoming overweight
  • 3. Visit a vet regularly to maintain your pets health
  • 4. Get your pet Vaccinations. This will prevent them from catching any diseases that could affect their health.
  • 5. Give your pet a comfortable and spacious home/bed – This is where they will sleep and get the rest they need so it needs to be somewhere they want to go
  • 6. Go to a Vet to check you are feeding your pet the right food for them. I.e. the food you give your dog depends on the breed of the dog you have, so it is vital you check.
  • 7. Allow your pet to adapt to its new environment and dogs/cats/horses allow to interact with other animals at an early stage in order for them to know how to react in social situations properly.
  • 8. Watch your pets teeth, bad breath could mean digestive problems
  • 9. Give your pet toys, your pets need to have something to interest them as you cannot be their 24/7
  • 10. Clean and groom your pet regularly, this will maintain their health and help prevent catching disease

Top Tips on ensuring your new rabbit is a happy bunny!

Animal lovers in the UK could be putting one of the country’s favourite pets at risk due to a worrying lack of knowledge about their basic needs.

A new report to mark Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW), which starts today, reveals that almost two thirds of pet owners underestimate the amount of space rabbits need, whilst less than half knew that hay should be a key part of their diet.

And it turns out that carrot-munching Bugs Bunny hasn’t done his kind a favour; whilst more than two thirds of pet owners would regularly feed their rabbits carrots, experts today warn that they are high in sugar and can lead to obesity or diabetes.

Perhaps unsurprisingly then, more than one third of pet owners believe a rabbit’s lifespan is about 5 years, when they can actually live beyond a decade if they’re correctly looked after.

Rabbit Awareness Week aims to educate pet owners and potential pet owners about the welfare and emotional wellbeing of our furry friends.

So, if you’re about to buy a bunny for your children, what exactly should you be doing to ensure their as happy as can be?

Podcast: TV vet Matt Brash gives his top ten tips on how to ensure you have everything you need for your new rabbit and how best to look after it when you’ve finally purchased it.

Are we happier with a pet in our life?

Over the next month David Cameron and his helpers will travel around the UK to find out how happy we are as a nation .The Prime Minister’s Big Idea is the National Happiness Index which will gauge the nation’s fluctuating mood year by year.

However, a new study released today by the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) may have already done the work for him, with the research showing happiness is a warm furry animal (or a cold scaly snake if that’s what you are into).

The survey of over 2000 adults got respondents to rank their happiness levels and found that pet owners rate themselves as being happier than those without a pet.

From April, the Office for National Statistics will officially ask people to rate their happiness with the first national happiness index due in 2012.But before that it wants the public to give their views on how happiness can actually be measured and consultation events are taking place around the nation over the next month.

According to the survey released today by PFMA, pet owners will be at the front of the queue when it comes to giving their views on how to measure happiness – for them it’s all about the love they receive from their furry friends.

Nearly 60% of people with pets say their pet makes them a happier person, while a similar number say being with their cuddly companion makes them feel more relaxed. Almost a third even say their pet makes them a healthier person.

Whether or not they own a pet - 81% of people agree that “Pets are the antidote to a bad mood” so it’s not surprising that when pet owners do need a lift in their mood they’ll turn to their pet above all else, including their partner and chocolate. Non pet-owners use music to lift the doom and gloom, while chocolate rates equally with their partner as a mood enhancer.

In our podcast ex-Blue Peter presenter and animal lover Peter Duncan speaks about why pets can add so much happiness to people’s lives.

Spotlight on lungworm - Are you putting your dog’s life at risk?

Watch top tips from TV Vet Luke Gamble on how to protect your pet.

For many people the loss of a family pet can take years to get over yet despite this, a new study has found that many dog owners could be putting their precious pup at risk by failing to recognise the signs of a fatal disease which is on the rise in the UK.  Lungworm (A. vasorum) is a parasite that dogs can become infected with through eating slugs and snails carrying the larvae of the parasite.   Once inside the dog’s system, the parasite travels through the lungs, ending up in the heart.  If the infection is left untreated, the dog’s health can rapidly deteriorate, even resulting in death.  According to the “Be Lungworm Aware” study, vets have noticed an increase in diagnosed cases.   Worryingly many pet owners don’t even know what the disease is or how to keep their dog from becoming infected. So what is lungworm and what can you do to prevent your dog from picking it up?

TV Vet Luke Gamble and animal lover Jenni Falconer join us live online to give you the most up to date information on protecting your dog from this killer disease at: http://www.studiotalk.tv/show/spotlight-on-lungworm-are-you-putting-your-dogs-life-at-risk

 National
37% have never heard of Lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum)
83% did not know any of the symptoms of lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) infection in dogs52% did not realise that dogs become infected with lungworm by eating slugs and snails.
85% say their dog is a key part of the family and losing it to a preventable illness would cause great regret.

Take the lead on pet stress and avoid getting collared

Top tips from TV vet Dr Scott Miller on how to deal with pet issues such as separation anxiety and boredom

We all want the best for our much loved pets and new research from Tesco Pet Insurance has revealed that a third of us would even give up our favourite vices and even forgo our annual holiday to help pay for their vet bills.

So how do you ensure your pet stays happy and healthy, while avoiding unnecessary expenditure?

Get checked early – a change in the weather for pets, as with humans, can lead to number of easily treated and preventable ailments, a 20 minute check up now could save hours of anxiety and hundreds of pounds in bills.

Watch your pet’s waste-line – your pet may feel a little lonelier over the coming months as the summer with family fades, it is tempting to shower them with too much love and extra food to compensate – but be warned this can lead to bigger problems.

Keep pet food for pets - the way to your pet’s heart may be through its stomach – but did you know that disruption to feeding routines can cause stress and top-ups with human food tit-bits can prove toxic?

Avoid separation anxiety - We all feel sad when we are apart from someone we love and pets are no different but relieving the symptoms can be really straight forward with a little imagination.

Ensure your pets get plenty of exercise – giving your pet plenty of exercise and ensuring they have a range of toys and routines to keep them stimulated will help keep them happy and healthy.

Dr Scott Miller resident vet from TV’s ‘This Morning’ is on hand to share some simple but effective tips on how to tackle a plethora of pet related issues; from separation anxiety to simple things all owners can do to make sure their stay stimulated, happy and healthy as the autumn nights start to draw in.

Who let the dog out?

In the following video TV vet Emma Milne shows you the benefits of microchipping your pet

We all want to keep our much loved pet safe, and there is no greater worry than that of losing them. It’s a sad fact that nearly 1000 pets go missing every day and only a small proportion of them ever find their way home.  Pets can stray for a number of reasons; they can become spooked during thunder storms or firework season, wander too far from home or become a little too curious whilst out on a walk. But while you may worry about your pet going missing or getting lost, a lack of understanding about microchipping can leave you concerned that your much loved pet may feel discomfort during the process. However this is not the case. Most chips are as small as a grain of rice and are inserted in much the same way as a vaccination, so your pet will hardly even notice. As there are so many chips available it is important to be fully informed of all the choices and make sure you get the best one for you and your pet, whether it is a dog, cat, or even fish! In the following video pet veterinarian Emma Milne explains the benefits of microchips and what you should look out for.
